STAGES OF SLEEP
Did you know that sleep occurs in different rapid eye movement (REM) stages which cycle throughout the night and the time spent in each stage is important?
Stage 1: (non-REM) is a short period where the brain slows its wakefulness patterns.
Stage 2: (non-REM) occurs before a deep sleep and is when the heart rate slows and temperature drops.
Stage 3: (non-REM) is a period of deep sleep. It is considered the most important as this is where the body repairs and regrows tissues, bones and muscles, as well as strengthens the immune system.
REM sleep occurs roughly 90 minutes after falling asleep. This is where the heart rate and breathing increases and the brain becomes more active.
